How to Walk a Reactive Dog

You should enjoy walking your dog at all times. It is important that you get to have some fun time with your dog, enjoying the outdoors and breathing fresh air. However, not all walks end up smooth like you expected them to. If your dog is reactive; you can expect that some walks will end up being a nightmare. There are some dog walking tricks that you can use to have a peaceful walk regardless of whether your pet has always been reactive or has started being reactive due to a recent bad experience.

Do not React
So, you are walking your dog when suddenly another dog appears from around the corner, and your calm pet turns into a snarling, growling beast. You can never know how dogs communicate but when this happens you sure can figure out that all is not well. Most dog owners will first react by panicking and especially if they have experienced such an incident in the past. Your dog will calm down if you remain as calm as possible.

Act Fast and Plan Ahead
When you see another dog approaching from a distance, it is best that you cross to the other side of the road to avoid any contact between them. Your pet is still likely to react, but continue walking away confidently and calmly and praise your dog if he remains silent. If you happen to walk into a situation you were not prepared for, quickly turn back. For dogs, it is often a case of out of sight; out of mind. If your dog seems a little resistant to walking away, encourage him to run a little and praise him for keeping up with the pace.

Get your Dog to Focus
At times, the only way you can control your dog and prevent him from reacting is by getting his focus. When you sight another dog and the owner coming your way, sit your dog on one side and start practicing what you have learnt. You can ask him to sit and stay while focusing his attention on some gift. If your dog is still likely to react, consider blocking his line of vision until the other dog passes.

Have the Right Equipment
There is no need of walking a reactive dog if it’s liable to slip off its lead. It is important that you ensure the safety of your dogs while walking them. The two hounds design dog harness ensures that your pet does not pull and prevents them from escaping easily. It is a way of ensuring that you have control over your dog should anything happen.

Know Why
You most definitely know your dog better than anyone else, so it is likely that you can understand his body language. If you can figure out why your dog reacts then you can be in a better position of dealing with the problem.
